Ian McCormack leads a mundane life in Christchurch New Zealand. He drags his closest surfing buddy along with him, testing fate for a wild adventure to find The Perfect Wave. His overly protective, religious, mother unwillingly sends him on his way weepily reminding him if he gets in trouble, turn to God.
One night, Ian goes with some friends on a dive for lobster and what they find is unexpectedly terrifying, a group of box jellyfish with venom so lethal that one sting can kill. Ian is stung five times and is abandoned on shore and left without hope. He remembers his mother's parting words, to turn to God when he is in trouble. In the back of the ambulance, he prays, accepting in whatever way he knows, God's grace.
