Roy Roper takes it upon himself to visit Brody and teach him a lesson. Before he is able to, though, he is confronted by Brody's mother. Roy comes to find out that Brody is being raised by a single mom and has no examples of a true man to look up to. So, he spends his time hanging around with rough kids at school and learning improper behavior from them. Roy decides that the only proper thing to do is to help Brody and teach him how to become a man. After meeting with his friends, Roy and a few other men take Brody out to the woods with the hopes of teaching him how to become a man, and end up getting a lot more than they bargained for.

In The Secret Handshake, Roy Roper seemingly has the perfect life. He lives in a nice, suburban home, has simple job at a publishing company, and has the perfect family. His wife and three daughters keep him busy, but he loves them and would do anything for them. They have a happy home life and a wonderful family and Roy loves all of his girls very much. Having grown up in a family of entirely sisters and having his dad pass away at a young age has made Roy very capable to handle daughters.
However, as his oldest daughter begins to get older, he notices that a boy has taken a liking to her. While his daughter Ashley used to like Brody, she observes that he has been hanging around a different crowd recently. When the Ropers find their house has been TP'd in the middle of the night, it doesn't take much effort to discover that Brody was the cause of the vandalism. As he picks up the soggy toilet paper, Roy begins to worry about this boy, and fears that he may be excessively stalking his daughter. Things come to a head one night when his daughter is given the big opportunity to do an important routine in their school's cheerleading group. As she gets ready to perform for her big moment, Brody sabotages her performance, embarrassing her and anger her father Roy.
Determined to put a stop to this, Roy visits Brody's house and prepares to have a harsh talk with him. Angered and ready to do anything to get Brody away from his daughter, Roy prepares for a verbal assault on this 13-year old mischievous boy. Before he is able to, though, he is confronted by Brody's single mom, Karen Jenkins, who confesses to Roy that she has no idea how to raise her son. Without a father in the house to help raise him, she has no idea how to teach him to be a man. Roy begins to understand the problem and decides not to pursue his attack on Brody. Instead, he chooses to help Karen by teaching Brody how to be a real man.
This causes Roy to realize that he doesn't know how to teach this, or even if he fully understands what it means. Taking to the internet to discover what masculine rituals make up the idea of being a man, Roy begins to formulate a plan. Meeting with his other friends to come up with a plan to teach Brody about being a man, they determine the best course of action. One day, they show up in Brody's room and explain that they are taking him out to the woods "ÌÎÌ_? to camp out and learn what it means to be a man.
