The Bible Stories: Joseph | Christian Movies & DVDs

The Bible Collection: Joseph

Cast into a deep dark pit by his envious brothers and later sold into slavery by these same men, Joseph lived a life of incredible tragedy, but also amazing success. His story is a fantastic one to hold onto as an incredible tale of God's providence and the ability to overcome incredible tragedy. From a young age, Joseph knew he was different and was destined to do something great. And while he may have initially let these thoughts go to his head, along with the knowledge that he was his father's favorite, he was eventually able to humble himself and do what was right. Joseph's story is one full of ups and downs, but in the end, he was able to follow God's will for his life and save an entire nation, almost singlehandedly. This incredible film, starring Ben Kingsley, Paul Mercurio, and Martin Landua, has gone down as an incredible Biblical classic with a fantastic storyline and as an amazing recreation of the classic Biblical tale, The Bible Collection: Joseph.

Joseph's Early Life

The Bible Collection: Joseph follows the story of Joseph, a story you can find in the book of Genesis, the first book of the Bible. Joseph was the son of Jacob, and as the second youngest, Jacob grew very attached to Joseph, mostly due to him being the first child of his favorite wife, Rachel. When Joseph was young, his father gave him a special coat of many beautiful colors. It stood out from the rest as an extravagant gift and because of this, it made his other brothers jealous of him and the favor thrust on him by his father. One day Joseph informed his brothers that he had a dream in which all of his brothers fell down and worshipped him. This conceited (although prophetic) dream angered his brothers and drove them to be incredibly jealous of Joseph and all he had accomplished.

The brothers began to scheme against Joseph. Joseph had taken away all of the glory and attention off all of his 11 brothers and because of this, his brothers simply wanted to be rid of him. So they devised a clever plan and lured joseph out to a pit. There, they threw him in, intending on leaving him to die. However, Reuben had a soft spot for Joseph and he eventually convinced his brothers that they could sell him into Egyptian slavery instead of leaving him there to die. And so, the brothers took Joseph and sold him into slavery. They were able to steal his coat of colors and rip it, laying sheep's blood on top of it. They returned it to their father and convinced him that Joseph had been killed by a wild animal and that he was dead.

And so we leave Joseph's home, but that is far from the end of the story. The Bible Collection: Joseph continues the story as Joseph as he finds himself a slave to Potiphar, a high ranking official in Egypt. But it was here that God chose to bless Joseph and make him an incredible power. Joseph was soon able to rule over the whole household for Potiphar, by working his way slowly through the ranks by being an incredible and hard-working slave. Because of God's blessing and Potiphar noticing his hard work, Joseph was promoted to the head of the household and was able to take care of all of Potiphar's affairs. Potiphar didn't have to worry about a thing, everything was taken care of for him by Joseph.

Joseph's Downfall

Unfortunately, Joseph soon had a downfall, by no fault of his own, when Potiphar's wife attempted to seduce him. When Joseph didn't comply, Potiphar's wife accused him of assaulting her, And Joseph was promptly thrown in prison. But even in prison he found success as he was eventually put in charge of the jail and monitored the other prisoners. Two prisoners came to him who used to work for Potiphar, and Joseph was able to interpret their dreams. He informed the one prisoner that he was going to be promoted back to his original role, and the other prisoner was informed by Joseph that he was soon going to be killed. And these two dreams were fulfilled just as Joseph had predicted. Word of Joseph's dream prediction ability eventually got around and eventually, Potiphar himself found a dream that he couldn't explain. And so, Joseph was brought out of prison and brought before Potiphar once more. Much to Potiphar's amazement, Joseph was able to interpret the dream and he determined that Egypt was headed toward seven years of plenty, where there would be more food than they could possibly ever eat. However, it would be followed by seven years of famine, where no food could grow in the land. And so Joseph encouraged Potiphar to store up food for themselves now so that they would have plenty when the seven years of famine came. The Bible Collection: Joseph continues the story of Joseph and explains it in a gripping and intense format.

Joseph's Reunion

In The Bible Collection: Joseph, we find Joseph in the final act in charge of basically the whole country. Here, Joseph works hard to make sure that every need is met and that the country is ready for the 7 years of famine. And when those years of famine truly come, Egypt is secure, but other countries around them are struggling. So Joseph's brothers come and visit Egypt looking for food. They end up meeting Joseph and bow down to him, pleading for food. Joseph makes them return to their home and come back with Benjamin. When they return with Benjamin, Joseph supplies them with food, and after playing a few games with them, eventually confesses that he is indeed Joseph, their long-lost brother. After a joyful reunion, Joseph allows his family to move to Egypt, where he even reunites with his father, Jacob, a man he hasn't seen in decades.
