Synopsis

Veggie Tales: Larry Boy and the Rumor Weed opens in the quiet town of Bumblyburg. Two French peas, Percy and Li'l are leaving a movie theater, but are cornered by a scallion, who asks them for a nickel. Percy refuses, but the scallion angrily demands that they give him all their money. Just as the bandit escapes with his loot, he is cornered by none other than Larry Boy! He gets the money from the bandit and returns it to Percy, and the scallion is sent to jail.

After this, Larry heads over to Alfred's house and accidentally knocks a plant off the ledge. This plant gets caught on some phone wires on the way down to the ground. The woman on the phone had been gossiping, and these wires magically bring the plant to life.

The next morning, Alfred is giving a lecture to the children at the school. He says that he needs to go home and "recharge his batteries" (meaning that he needs to rest). Junior Asparagus and Laura Carrot take this expression seriously and begin to speculate that Alfred is actually a robot. On their way home from school, they encounter a small, talking plant. The weed coerces them into sharing their story about Alfred being a robot, and little weeds begin to pop up all over town spreading this rumor.

Larry is at Alfred's house once more, helping him tend his garden. Alfred receives a phone call and runs inside to answer it. Meanwhile, a little weed pops up to tell Larry the rumor about Alfred being a robot. He chooses not to listen and dismisses the weed. Alfred frantically calls Larry in the house, where they are greeted by Mayor Blueberry. She informs them that little weeds are beginning to spread the story of Alfred being a robot all over town. People are beginning to believe this terrible rumor, and Larry decides to put a stop to it.

Larry goes searching through the town for a weed so that he can try destroying it. He eventually finds one and tries shredding it with a weed whacker. The weed is so strong that the device breaks, and he is forced to try something else. Back at Larry Boy's cave, Alfred discovers that all of the little weeds are connected to a Mother Weed, which is located in the sewers underground. Larry Boy decides that in order to stop this rumor from being spread, he must confront the Mother Weed.

He arrives at the sewer and finds the terrifying Mother Weed. It is much bigger than Larry, and he is quickly overpowered. Alfred begins to become quite hurt by the people of Bumblyburg, as they all believe the rumor and stay away from him. They are scared of him, saying that he is a killer robot with laser eyes. Suddenly, the Mother Weed breaks free from the sewer and snatches Alfred up. Larry Boy tries to recruit the citizens to help him, but they refuse, saying that maybe it's best that Alfred be contained.

Junior Asparagus' father shows up, demanding to know what is going on. The Mother Weed tells him the story about Alfred, saying that she received it from "very reliable sources"ÌÎ_̴Ìà?. Junior Asparagus and Laura Carrot confess that they took what Alfred said about recharging his batteries literally and started the terrible rumor. Junior's Dad explains to them that God doesn't want us to spread stories that hurt people, even if they are true. He talks about the concept of spreading nice words and building others up and how this is something we must do.

The kind words that he is saying about Alfred cause flowers to sprout on Mother Weed. Junior and Laura decide that the only way they can save Alfred from the weed is to start spreading nice words about him. They convince the citizens that Alfred is not a robot, and they start saying nice things about him and about each other. Flowers begin sprouting everywhere, raining from the sky, and the weed is overtaken by beautiful flowers.

In the end, Laura and Junior learn a very important lesson that words carry a lot of weight. Junior's dad drives home the point that God does not want us to say mean things about people, whether they are true or not. Just because something is the truth does not mean we should tell everyone. We are commanded in the Bible to build each other up and encourage one another with our words, not carelessly tear each other down. Larry Boy and the Rumor Weed teaches important lessons about rumors and the power of hurtful words. It also reinforces this message with a positive one that says we should spread nice words about people. This film is a great teaching tool for parents, as well as entertaining for the whole family.
