When God Doesn't Fix It: The Laura Story

When life takes unexpected turns they usually seem to be for the worst, and usually it is hard to see how good could ever come out of these twists in the story of life. For worship leader and recording artist Laura Story this was exactly the case when she found out that her husband, Martin, had been diagnosed with a brain tumor. Her belief that "all things are possible through God"í«? was shaken even more when they discovered their was no cure to solve Martin's short term memory loss, failing eyesight, and other complications. Throughout her struggle to understand God's purpose and plan in broken dreams, however, Laura has discovered a deeper joy and relationship with her Savior. When God Doesn't Fix It is the story of Laura Story, and her journey of faith through dark and difficult times.

The Laura Story

For many Christians the words to Laura's song "Blessings" are both familiar and equally powerful. "'Cause what if your blessings come through rain drops, what if Your healing comes through tears? What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You're near? What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise." The words whisper hope and comfort to every struggling heart. They remind listeners of their own struggles, their own times of comfort and blessings, their own difficult journeys, and yet they speak a message of truth-- God always uses the times of difficulty for good. Laura's own story, however, begins long before she wrote and recorded the number one Christian hit "Blessings" or wrote her book turned film When God Doesn't Fix It. In fact, at one time the award winning singer/ songwriter did not even think she could sing! The once aspiring symphony conductor first started down her path to a different world of music in a class registration line at her college, Columbia International University. That day she bumped into Shane Williams of the popular indie pop-rock band Silers Bald, and he asked her to join his band. Five years later, after years playing with Shane's band, Laura was once again ready for a new direction. Her manager had suggested she could sing and write on her own, but Laura remained unconvinced.

Besides her lack of confidence, she was also low on funds and nowhere close writing to enough songs for a complete record. God had different plans for Laura even before her journey described in When God Doesn't Fix It, however, and the money needed for her own venture soon arrived. Trusting that God would also provide the last songs she needed, Laura jumped into recording her first independent album in 2002. Soon after the recording began, Laura was driving home down the mountains one day. As she soaked in the creation around her she started singing "Indescribable, uncontainable, You placed the stars in the sky and You know them by name". and the last song she needed was born. In 2004 Chris Tomlin recorded her song, "Indescribable," and suddenly Laura had penned one of the most well known worship songs in the nation.

There was still a long journey to go, however, before Laura would have the story God wanted to include in When God Doesn't Fix It. In 2005 Laura released her second independent album and married her high school sweetheart Martin Elvington. The two moved to Atlanta, and Laura became a worship leader and woman' s pastor for arts and music at Perimeter Church. In 2006, after one year of marriage Laura's husband, Martin, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Among the breathing machines, physical therapy, radiation treatments, surgeries, sight and memory loss, moments of fear, and times when Laura was not sure her husband would come out alive her faith was tested and shaken. Yet, in her moments of darkness Laura clung to her faith, penning songs that came from struggles and sorrows near and dear to her heart. What was a time of greatest darkness and struggle for Laura and Martin turned into one of their greatest ministry platforms. Laura recorded "Blessings," a song that touched many hearts, and wrote her book When God Doesn't Fix It. The book, and film that followed, are, as Laura said, for any individual who's prayer was not answered the way they expected or in the time they would have liked. The book was written for anyone who has walked down a difficult road and questioned their beliefs. Today Laura lives with her husband and children, and still works as a recording artist and worship leader. Though the two still struggle with effects from his tumor, Laura and Martin stand confident in their belief that God uses everything "for good."

Conclusion

Written from her own journey and life, When God Doesn't Fix It is a heart to heart record of God's goodness, faithfulness, trustworthiness, and support. This film is for anyone who has ever walked a journey of difficult times, anyone who can empathize with Laura's heartfelt cry in "Blessings." It will encourage you that God is a God who uses his answers to prayers and his time frame to write a beautiful story.
