Description

When Calls the Heart: Heart of the Family

When Calls the Heart: Heart of the Family is the third DVD in the second season of When Calls the Heart. This film focuses on Jack and Elizabeth’s relationship with each other, as well as Abigail and Bill Avery. This romantic adventure is full of twists and turns, as well as important life lessons about love and the trials of the heart.

When Calls the Heart: Heart of the Family opens on Hope Valley on a very cold day. Clara is perusing the mercantile and unknowingly catches the eye of a handsome gentleman behind her. This man, Luke McCoy has only recently arrived in Hope Valley after his father accepted a job at the lumber mill. Luke is taken with the beautiful Clara and awkwardly tries to make conversation. She thinks that he is very cute, but is a little bit taken aback by his awkward manner. He gets up his courage and asks Clara to the upcoming ice cream social. Though she is flattered by his offer, she immediately refuses and leaves the mercantile quickly.

Elsewhere in town, Jack sees Bill Avery’s horse tied up outside the saloon. He goes inside, and the two men greet each other and sit down to have a conversation. Earlier, Jack received a notice about possible counterfeiters in town and asks Bill if that is what has brought him to Hope Valley. Bill then inquires about how Abigail is doing, and Jack does not respond. This is all the answer needed to convey her feelings toward him. In an attempt to change the subject, Jack asks Bill if he has any description of the counterfeiters, but he evades the question and quickly leaves the saloon. Confused by this response, Jack also leaves and continues on with his day.

Meanwhile, Rosemary corners Lee and does her best to convince him to support her in building a theatre in Hope Valley. He brushes her off and explains that he does not have time to focus on a theatre because he is too busy with his business and new contacts. Rosemary refuses to hear what he is saying and storms out of his office in a rage.

Clara sits down with Abigail and Elizabeth and tells them of the way she rejected Luke McCoy earlier that day. The more Abigail thinks about this rejection, the more she is troubled by it. She is afraid that her young daughter-in-law has rejected a second chance at love because she cannot move on from the memory of Peter, Abigail’s son. She goes to the pastor for guidance, and he tells her that he does not believe it is the memory of Peter that is keeping Clara from moving on. He believes that she rejected Luke McCoy out of respect for Abigail, and doesn’t want to hurt her by dating again. Abigail resolves to make her feelings known to Clara and let her know that it is okay to move forward with her life.

Later in the day, Jack approaches Bill Avery, holding a five dollar bill in his hand. This bill was just turned over to Jack by the bank, and he is headed out to inform all the banks to watch out for counterfeits. Sternly, Bill tells Jack that he needs to drop this investigation and let him handle it. He instructs him to resume his normal duties as constable and keep his nose out of this counterfeiting business. Jack is hurt and confused, unsure of what is causing such a strong response in Bill.

Abigail finally is able to talk to Clara about the whole situation with Luke McCoy. She can tell that the pastor was right and that Clara is concerned about Peter’s memory and what it would mean to her if she started dating again. Touched by her words, Abigail tells her that it is okay to start dating again, as Peter wouldn’t want her to spend the rest of her life again. In order to find love again and move forward, she must let go of the guilt that plagues her and accept the future. Clara gives the same advice to Abigail and tells her that they both must work on this together.

Earlier in the day, Charles decided to surprise Elizabeth by showing up in her classroom. The two are out taking a stroll together, and she questions him as to why he has come to Hope Valley. Very casually, he responds that it is simply for business purposes, but Elizabeth very much doubts that. Suddenly, Lee Coulter yells out for Charles. As it turns out, Elizabeth’s father’s shipping company is one of Lee’s first big contracts. The fact that her father is involved makes Elizabeth sure that Charles showing up in Hope Valley is no coincidence.

Just outside of Hope Valley, Bill has met up with two men who are responsible for the counterfeiting. In an unexpected twist, he collects money from them and places it in his saddlebag. It appears that he is involved in their ring of crime, until one of the men pulls a gun on him. Suddenly, Jack shows up and takes down the two men. Bill is greatly upset and chastises Jack for blowing his cover and his investigation, but Jack refuses to listen. Had he not showed up, Bill would most likely be dead or severely injured.

Charles continues to spend time with Elizabeth, and keeps bringing up the subject of her returning to Hamilton and teaching there. She tells him that her heart is in Coal Valley and she can’t imagine leaving. Later, Charles has a talk with Jack and can see that his relationship with Elizabeth is something beautiful. Realizing that he is no competition for Elizabeth’s heart, he makes plans to head home.

Clara has finally accepted Luke McCoy’s offer and agrees to go to the ice cream social with him. Charles is preparing to leave town, and Elizabeth quickly kisses him goodbye. Though she intends it as a goodbye kiss and wishes their relationship to be platonic, Jack sees this as he is coming out of the jail. He is shocked and scared, believing that Elizabeth’s heart may not be fully his. When Calls the Heart: Heart of the Family has a dramatic ending and is full of adventure at every corner.

When Calls the Heart: Heart of the Family is not rated by the Motion Picture Association of America but is considered suitable for all audiences. It is always recommended that parents preview all content to determine what is suitable for their children.

When Calls the Heart Review by babyboomer47

I have all three seasons of When Calls the Heart. It is a wonderful family friendly love story of a beautiful wealthy heiress who moved to the western frontier of Canada to teach school. She fell in love with a handsome Canadian Mountie. This story tells of the perils, challenges and mostly the love that the people of Hope Valley share. It is about love, forgiveness, charity and redemption. Producers Brian Bird and Michael Landon Jr. have done an excellent job of bringing the book series of Janette Oke's When Calls the Heart alive. I am addicted to this show. It has moved me more than any television series has in life. In today's chaotic world, we need When Calls the Heart to ground us and help us see what things in life truly matter. I hope this series goes on forever! (Posted on 2/7/17)

Best movie series ever Review by Pat

When Calls the Heart series has been more than I could have ever imagined. Family and faith based movies are so hard to find. This movie series is "my happy place". The main characters are great role models for young girls and boys as well as inspiring to us all to be better in all that we do. The writers have given us great drama, romance, and intrigue. There is also a group of fans that love this show and we all share a kindred spirit. My eleven year old granddaughter loves this and watches it with me. It has been one of the best highlights of this past year for me. (Posted on 7/24/15)
