VeggieTales: The Ballad of Little Joe - Christian Children's DVD

Veggie Tales the Ballad of Little Joe DVD

A tumbleweed rolls across the desert sand in a town not too far from the Okie-Dokie Corral, way out in the West somewhere. It is here that The Ballad of Little Joe begins, a fun and entertaining spin on the Bible story of Joseph. Presented by Veggie Tales, this film is an enjoyable Western ride that children of all ages will immensely enjoy.

It details the life of Little Joe (Larry) and his adventures that required great faith in God. Little Joe has many great talents, including problem solving, organizational skills, and the ability to interpret dreams. The movie begins on his birthday, where his father lavishes him with presents and everything he could want for his special day. All of his brothers, except the youngest, are jealous of the special attention he receives and resent him for the way their father favors him.

Little Joe decides to tell his brothers about a dream he had the night before. He dreamed that all of his brothers bowed down to him, and he speculates that this might one day happen in the future. Not realizing how upsetting this is to them, he continues on about his dream. His brothers are greatly enraged and decide to teach him a very important lesson. They take him out and leave him stranded in a pit, and he is later sold into slavery to a band of scallions.

Little Joe ends up working in a saloon for Mr. McPotiphar and his unique talents make him a much valued employee. Also working at the saloon is Miss Kitty. Her job is to entertain the patrons from the stage. When Little Joe is named Employee of the Month, replacing her, she becomes extremely jealous of him. She takes action and decides to frame him for theft. He is imprisoned for theft of gold, which is a crime that he never committed.

There in prison, Little Joe manages to keep a positive attitude, despite his terrible circumstances. He is able to help two inmates when they have dreams. He interprets their dreams for them, and his predictions come true. The Mayor begins to hear talk of Little Joe’s knack for interpreting dreams, and summons to help interpret a rather disturbing dream.

This particular dream held a rather disturbing picture of seven fat cows being devoured by seven scrawny cows. Little Joe immediately understands the message contained in this dream and warns the mayor of impending famine. There will first be seven years of plenty, but these will be followed by seven years of famine. The people must fill the storehouses so they will be prepared when famine hits.

The Mayor listens to Little Joe’s interpretation and puts him in charge of distributing the resources during the famine. As he is distributing food to the people, he recognizes his brothers as they come to receive their provisions. He is overcome with emotion and desperately wants to reveal himself to them. However, he must first determine if they have changed their ways. He devises a plan in which the youngest, Benjamin, is framed for theft to see how they respond.

Each of the brothers tries to take the fall for Benjamin, mourning the loss of their other brother and regretting their awful mistake. Little Joe is overcome as he realizes that they really have changed, and he decides to reveal his identity to them. The brothers throw themselves at his mercy, realizing what they have done to him and how he has turned the other cheek and forgiven them. Little Joe accepts their humble apology and the film ends with a happy reunion had by all.

Lessons for Children

Veggie Tales: The Ballad of Little Joe is a lighthearted Western that contains many serious messages. The lesson at the heart of the film is all about forgiveness. Though Little Joe’s brothers treated him horribly and sold him into slavery, he returned their meanness with kindness.

Little Joe was able to have faith in God throughout the entire time he was stuck as a slave and in prison. He knew that, no matter what, God would turn a bad situation into good and would work things out. Had Little Joe not been there to interpret the Mayor’s dream, the town would not have known about the coming famine. Also, had he not been put in charge of distributing the food, he would not have had the reunion with his brothers.

Little Joe had a good relationship with God and was able to learn many lessons from him. He knew that God had forgiven him, and he understood the importance of forgiving others. This is an important lesson for young children to learn, as they will be faced with people who do them wrong in their lives. If we don’t forgive others, we spend the rest of our lives trapped in a prison of hatred and bitterness that will consume us. God forgave us for our sins, though we did not deserve his forgiveness. We must, in turn, show the same forgiveness to others.

Veggie Tales: The Ballad of Little Joe contains the lessons of forgiveness and trusting God, among many others. Each of these lessons is presented in an entertaining and lively manner that will appeal to kids. These “grown up” lessons are applicable to the lives of children and will teach them important Biblical principles. Parents will be able to reinforce the values taught in these films and will be grateful for the teaching assistance that Veggie Tales provides. Children will be delighted by the humor and hilarity of the characters and unique storylines, as well as take away important lessons and values that will stay with them forever.

Veggie Tales: The Ballad of Little Joe is not rated by the Motion Picture Association of America. However, it is considered suitable for all audiences. As always, it is recommended that parents preview all content to determine what is suitable for their family to watch.
