Restless Heart: The Confessions of Augustine

History is filled with great men of faith. Men with real struggles, and real stories of redemption. The award winning film Restless Heart: The Confessions of Augustine tells the story of one such man--Augustine of Hippo (as played by Alessandro Preziosi). Based on Augustine's own writings, Restless Heart: The Confessions of Augustine vividly portrays the life and times of Saint Augustine--his life, his conversion, and his efforts for the sake of the gospel. This fascinating film--and Augustine's own life--will inspire and encourage you with his struggles and his salvation.

Saint Augustine

Augustine was born in 354 A.D., in part of Africa then under the control of the Roman Empire. His mother, Monica (another Catholic saint), was a devout Christian, and though his Father was pagan, Augustine was raised, Christian. Because Augustine's family was upper class he received education from a young age and is often considered one of the most intelligent men in world history. Though his mother had great influence over his early years--something portrayed beautifully in Restless Heart: The Confessions of Augustine-- Augustine was rebellious by nature, and his school and friends influenced his actions greatly. He recounts one story in his autobiography The Confessions that occurred only a few years after he first attended school, in which he and his friends stole fruit from a neighbor's tree not because they needed it, but because "it was forbidden." Forbidden fruits would greatly tempt Augustine throughout much of his life, but as you will see in Restless Heart: The Confessions of Augustine God will forgive and strengthen even those who deserve it least.

When Augustine was seventeen he traveled to Carthage to continue his studies.

While studying in Carthage he became greatly interested in philosophy--an interest that would continue throughout his life. During his stay in Carthage Augustine would also leave Christianity (much to his mother's despair) and begin living a very worldly party-like lifestyle. (During this period of time in the film Restless Heart: The Confessions of Augustine, it is very powerful to see Augustine's mother Monica constantly praying that God would change her son's heart.) After his studies Augustine traveled throughout the Roman Empire teaching and holding other positions. He was a great orator, skilled in rhetoric, and held many influential roles in the last years of the Roman Empire.

While he was in Milan Augustine came in contact with a strong Christian, and equally, skilled philosopher named Ambrose (also a Catholic saint). Ambrose convinced Augustine that Christianity was the only true religion, but for many years Augustine believed his life had been too sinful for God to save and forgive him. Finally in 386, after hearing the powerful testimony of a friend, Augustine picked up the Bible, and his life--as you will see in Restless Heart: The Confessions of Augustine--was forever changed.

After his conversion and baptism, Augustine would return to his family home in Africa. He would eventually become a priest and bishop, preaching often and with great passion. He would turn his home into a monastery, and his later life would be characterized by many charitable gifts. Augustine is well known for his many writings, the most famous of which is his autobiography The Confessions and The City of God. He had great influence on early Christian theology, Western philosophy, and the Western world in general as he witnessed the collapse of the Roman Empire during his life. Augustine's life--displayed in Restless Heart: The Confessions of Augustine-- serves as a powerful example that God can transform the most lost of hearts.

Monica--Augustine's Mother

Although Restless Heart: The Confessions of Augustine is about Augustine's life, his mother Monica was a profound influence, and her role in Augustine's life is beautifully portrayed in this film.

Monica was born in 331 A.D. in what is now present-day Algeria. She was married off at a young age to a Roman pagan by the name of Patricius. Monica's married life was filled with difficulties. Her mother in law had a violent temper and did not approve of Monica's beliefs, but her husband allowed her to continue her devoted Christian walk. Monica's life is characterized by perseverance and constant prayer--traits you will see in Restless Heart: The Confessions of Augustine. After many years of faithful witnessing, Monica's husband and his mother were converted to Christianity and joined her in her walk of faith. She soon learned, however, that Augustine had left the faith, so, following the death of her husband, she followed him to Milan to bring him back.

Monica is a shining example of the power a praying mother can have over her children's lives. Her example greatly influenced Augustine's early life, and her constant prayers brought him back home. As you watch Restless Heart: The Confessions of Augustine, you will be challenged to remember that prayer and example is powerful. You never know whose future you might change.

Conclusion

Augustine's life is a reminder that God can redeem the lives of those who are the most unworthy. That he cares for each individual. That prayers are powerful. As you watch Restless Heart: The Confessions of Augustine you will not only see the life of an influential man brought to life, you will not only see great moments of history, you will see God working through lives and through history to tell his story.
