Janet Broderick (played by Lee Remick) knows what the most important things are. Her family, her marriage, the family business she runs with her husband. Somehow, however, these things are starting to slip through her grasp. The business is starting to go downhill, despite Janet’s best efforts to keep it afloat. Her mother (played by Angela Lansbury) is starting to get sicker and sicker. Somehow even her marriage is starting to fall apart-- strained by the business and family issues. The heartwarming Christmas film The Gift Of Love: A Christmas Story was created by the same individual behind the beloved television series “The Waltons”-- Earl Hamner Jr. Earl Hamner Jr.’s beloved series was inspired by his own childhood. Born in June of 1923 in Schuyler, Virginia Earl Hamner Jr. was the oldest of eight children. Raised in the Blue Ridge Mountains with his four brothers and three sisters, Earl Hamner Jr.’s childhood felt the difficulties of the Great Depression. Hamner’s father had worked in the mountain’s mine until the dawn of the Great Depression. When he lost his job, Earl Hamner Jr.’s father was forced to work as a mechanic nearly thirty miles away from his family and home. Inspired by his childhood in the mountains of West Virginia and as a tribute to his beloved family, Earl Hamner Jr. wrote the screenplay for a film called “Spencer’s Mountain.” This film would eventually evolve into the well known television series “The Waltons” which ran for nine seasons. Known for his heartwarming, family and faith friendly stories, The Gift Of Love: A Christmas Story was the last film Earl Hamner Jr. wrote. Earl Hamner Jr. passed away in March of 2016, but his spirit, and his desire for families to enjoy life together lives on in his shows and films such as The Gift Of Love: A Christmas Story.
