America’s founding history is rich with events and details unknown to most citizens, but with this delightfully informative six disc set, you can venture back into our history and explore with Foundations of Freedom host, David Barton, what took place as our forefathers took to the task of founding our nation. Read for yourself entries and letters by our forefathers detailing their view how they wished their future government would be modeled after principles in the Bible.
You’ll accompany political activist and historian David Barton with his guests, former legislator Rick Green , radio host Glenn Beck, author and professor Dr. Carol Swain and congresswoman Michelle Bachmann. As the judicial and economical systems formed, and government and science was debated, you’ll be able to see what sort of role the Bible played into all of that. The documentary explores what America’s struggle through writing the Declaration of Independence looked like as they drew upon principles of the Bible. It also goes into the topic of philosophies of education that formed in those early days and compares that with our modern day situations.
The first disc is divided into three parts. 1) Rick Green helps talk about the Bible, 2) Michelle Bachmann introduces Foundations of Law, and 3) continues that into part two. The speakers touch on various topics highlighting amazing facts that illuminate just how vital the Bible was to our founding fathers. One of the interesting facts is that Thomas Jefferson, one of the key leaders in developing education curriculum, included the New Testament and Old Testament. Also weighing in on the topic of education you’ll hear what Benjamin Rush had to say about taking the Bible out of schools, and how Fisher Ames was adamant on keeping the Bible in the schools. Learning first hand just what some of their intentions were for making the systems is very enlightening, and helps better gauge where we may be going by noticing where we’ve come from, and what difference time has made in our systems.
In the second disc, we stay on the topic of Bible, but get a chance to look deeper into how the Bible influenced the founding of our justice system, economics.
In the third disc again the Bible is looked at and how it has influenced their choices in exploring endeavors in science, competition and choice, and forming the judiciary system.
The fourth dics explores topics like God and government, the church at that the time and their involvement. Various theories of government are looked through the lens of scripture.
The fifth deals with soft subject matters like manners and civility, integrity in politics, and expectations of their country.
The last disc goes into topics like unity under God in one nation, the myths that might exist about our country, and an enduring Republic.
The quality of the series is exceptional. Very professionally done, with the cut-in graphics, the studio, camera angles, etc. It adds to a very attention grabbing feel and keeps the viewer the entire time. David does a really good job at keeping the conversations and dialogues going at a pace that pulls you in. At times it may seem that David is not really letting his guests speak and is adding too much, but I soon realized that this is not exactly a Q and A style documentary, but more of two peers, with credentials in their field, just talking about a given topic, going back and forth, both parties having a lot to give. The wealth of quotes that came from the founding fathers may be an obvious asset but it really does add to the unity and richness of the message of this series.
Being a very clean film this would be an appropriate resource for a political sciences classroom, a study group or just visiting topics like these at home with your family. It may be not be said outright, but you get the gist that the goal is to raise awareness that America was meant to be a Christian nation, not separate, with Church and state existing side by side. This may not go over well with some institutions, so exploration into what is exactly taught is recommended. Overall it is fundamentally a good Christian film that can effectively bring family together to give a chance to talk about the matters presented. The topics are just so varied that it would be impossible to begin to name them here, but suffice it to say, there is scarcely a person who will not walk away having not learned something from this enjoyably informative series.
