The Casting Process
One of the incredible things about Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors is Parton’s own involvement in the process. She wanted to play a part in determining who was cast for the play and she wanted to be sure the story was true-to-life and just as she remembered it growing up. One of the areas that Parton was able to help with was the casting process. As they were looking for people to play Parton’s family, she was able to come in and tell them who was similar to the real people from her family. When she saw Jennifer Nettles begin acting as her mother, she instantly knew that was the correct casting decision as she describes Nettles as being incredibly similar to her own real-life mother. Another actor she had already had in mind was Ricky Schroder, who was able to come in for an audition and land the part. Parton was equally blown away when meeting Alyvia Lind for the first time. She was able to do everything the movie required on cue and despite her youth, she was able to deliver a stellar performance.
In this NBC original television movie, we look back at the life of Dolly Parton, showing what she was like at the age of 9 and some of the tragedies she had to endure growing up. From a young age, it became very clear that Parton wanted to be a singer. She realized early on she had a gift and she really wanted to be able to use this gift when she grew up. Her whole family encouraged her and knew her to be a fantastic singer. With a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed demeanor, Dolly was ready for an exciting future ahead!
However, trouble struck her at a very young age. She was eagerly anticipating the arrival of their new baby brother. She was so excited to have a younger brother and she eagerly anticipated the day the baby would be born. When tragedy struck and the young baby boy died, she wasn’t sure how to go on. This baby, who she had never met, already meant the world to her and to have him be gone was a devastating loss for her, and the entire Parton family.
The family quickly descended into severe depression after this. Avie Lee Parton, Dolly’s mom, was barely able to continue functioning after this tragic loss, and because of her attitude, Dolly’s attitude, and everyone else’s in the family, the entire family was brought down, horribly distraught and discouraged. Things only seemed to get worse as time went on. The crops began to die, and Dolly’s father was unsure whether they would be able to survive any longer.
Things begin to turn around, however, when Dolly sees her mother working on a patchwork blanket that was originally intended to be for the baby boy. Dolly asks her mother what the blanket is for, since the baby was gone and he wasn’t going to be able to use it anymore. That’s when Dolly’s mom informs her that the blanket is for her, only it’s not going to be a blanket. Her mother is taking it to make into a coat that she can wear!
Despite some teasing and annoyances from various bullies, Dolly proudly wears her coat of many colors around and it begins to turn the family around for the better. Their long bout with depression begins to finally come to an end. A future of hope seems just over the horizon!
