Anne of Green Gables - The Sequel. The Stirring Second Installment about Anne Shirley.

Anne of Green Gables:  The Sequel DVD

Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel is the second installment in the Anne of Green Gables films. Picking up where the last film left off, this movie shows Anne Shirley as she grows into a lovely young woman from an inquisitive young girl. Anne embarks on new adventures, encounters new acquaintances, and discovers a taste of romance. Viewers will be enchanted by Anne’s story and will find themselves deeply involved in her story. This sequel to Anne of Green Gables is one that the whole family can enjoy and take away important life lessons from.

Synopsis

At just 16 years old, Anne Shirley has received her teacher’s license from the Charlottetown Queens Academy. She begins her teaching career by teaching at the Avonlea School, so that she may remain at Green Gables to help aging Marilla maintain the farm. However, in the past few years, Marilla’s health has greatly improved, allowing Anne to rekindle her ambition to go to college. Though she enjoys teaching, Anne’s dream is to someday become a writer. When her story “Averil’s Atonement” is rejected by a magazine, she becomes greatly distressed, fearing that her dreams will never come true.

On her way home, she runs into a friend, Gilbert Blythe. He informs her that Anne’s bosom friend, Diana, has just become engaged to Fred Wright. Anne is shocked, believing Diana’s decision to be impulsive and foolish.

At an engagement party for Diana and Fred, Gilbert and Anne wander off onto a bridge. There, Gilbert proposes to her, expressing his love and devotion. Anne is shocked and quickly rejects, convinced that their marriage could never be a happy one. She runs away, leaving him cold.

Later, Anne attends Diana’s wedding and sees Gilbert with a young woman named Christine. Gilbert informs her that he and Christine are just friends, but Anne is skeptical. He once again professes his love for Anne and promises to wait for her, if she feels the same way about him. Anne is unable to express her feelings for Gilbert and rejects him again. He begins to suspect that there is someone else in Anne’s life, though she has sworn that there is no one she cares for more than him.

Feeling the need to do something different with her life now that things in Avonlea have changed, Anne investigates a teaching post that has been offered to her by her old teacher, Miss Stacey. After some thought, she accepts and becomes an English teacher at Kingsport Ladies’ College. She hopes to gain some inspiration for a story from this new experience.

Anne arrives to Kingsport a bit naïve, unaware of the tension surrounding her acceptance of the position. A member of the Pringle family, a powerful force in Kingsport, applied for the same job and was rejected, causing strife between Anne and the Pringles. All of the students but one seem determined to make her job difficult, but she is equally determined to make things work. As time goes on, Anne is able to earn everyone’s respect through her hard work and dedication. She puts on a play with the students that is wildly successful, bringing the community together.

Anne’s dream of being a published author finally comes true when she writes a series of short stories, an idea that Gilbert proposed to her a while ago. She feels content and settled, happy with the way things are working out in Kingsport.

A student, Emmeline Harris, becomes quite close with Anne. Emmeline is staying at her controlling grandmother’s house, along with her aunt Pauline. The grandmother, a hypochondriac, has made Pauline a virtual prisoner in the house, not allowing her to leave. She is scared of what will happen if things in the old house change and if she ventures anywhere outside. Anne, full of light and energy, spends some time with the grandmother and is able to open her eyes and her heart to new experiences. She is able to convince the grandmother to get out and enjoy a community picnic, and let Pauline take a trip to another town and spend the night for her friend’s wedding. There, she strikes up a romance and returns home happier than ever, feeling indebted to Anne for the changes she has brought.

Anne is introduced to Emmeline’s widowed father, Morgan Harris. The two become quite close and journey together with Emmeline to see his spacious house in Boston. Emmeline wishes to become closer to her father, but he seems to put his business before her. Anne encourages him to spend more time with his daughter, and he is determined to make things right with her. After spending much time with Anne, he proposes to her, expressing his deep feelings for her. Anne is unsure of how to respond to this proposal, and asks to give him an answer later.

Meanwhile, Anne has befriended the uptight principal at the college and is able to convince her to take a much needed vacation to Avonlea. Katherine agrees to spend a summer at Green Gables with Anne, excited at the prospect of a new adventure. Anne declines Morgan’s proposal, and returns to Green Gables with Katherine.

After arriving home, Anne is informed that Gilbert is deathly ill nearby. He is consumed with scarlet fever after returning home from medical school in Halifax. Suddenly realizing her true feelings for him, Anne rushes to visit him and make known her affection for him. After fully recovering, Gilbert proposes to her once more. This time, Anne wholeheartedly accepts, and the two kiss. She declares that there is nothing she wants more in the world than to spend the rest of her life with him.

Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel is the inspiring story of one woman’s love for life and desire to share that with others. She is able to bring joy and love into the hearts of those most bitter and broken. This film is a beautiful portrait of life, hope, and the power of love.

Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel is rated G by the Motion Picture Association of America. It is considered suitable for all audiences. As always, it is recommended that parents preview all content to determine what is suitable for their family.
