The themes presented on this DVD include politeness, citizenship, loyalty, independence, and patriotism. Each of these episodes focuses on one of these themes and presents it to children in an entertaining and understandable format.
Episode 1—Center of the Universe teaches children the importance of politeness. A young car named EJ learns an important lesson about what it means to truly be polite to the other cars around him. He is full of pride and tends to think that the world revolves completely around him. His pride, however, is challenged when a car named Elrod begins to show him the fault of his ways. Elrod is an older car, who is very set in his ways and somewhat gruff. He has no tolerance for EJ’s prideful attitude and quickly shows him what it means to let go of that. EJ learns the importance of being humble and being polite to the other cars around him. His attitude begins to change over the course of the episode, and he apologizes to those around him, promising to have a better attitude in the future. Auto B Good: Hometown Heroes uses this first episode in the series to teach children a lesson about being polite.
Episode 2—The Price of Freedom focuses on the lesson of citizenship. Franklin is an older car and has many stories to tell. Often, these stories teach an important lesson. He wants to tell the story of his good friend CJ Willy, so he tells the younger cars that he has a story for them. This particular story teaches them what it means to be a citizen and to work together. Franklin’s friend CJ was a part of the Big War and learned the true meaning of dedicating his life to being a citizen. The younger cars learn what this truly means and how this applies to their lives. Auto B Good: Hometown Heroes uses the story of CJ Willy to teach kids what it means to be a citizen and how this has an effect on their actions.
Episode 3—No Greater Love is a continuation of CJ Willy’s story. Franklin taught the younger cars about what it meant to be a citizen, but has a new lesson in store for them using his friend’s story. This time, he teaches them the lessons of loyalty and bravery. CJ fought in the war alongside his friends and fellow soldiers, whom he came to love very much. In order to be successful soldiers, they had to learn how to work together and how to trust each other. CJ ended up sacrificing his life for his fellow soldiers, in order to keep them alive. This act of bravery greatly impacts the younger kids as Franklin tells the story, and they learn what it means to be loyal to one another. Bravery goes hand in hand with loyalty as it is no easy task to stick together and make such a big sacrifice for your friends. Auto B Good: Hometown Heroes uses this story of CJ Willy to teach kids the importance of bravery and loyalty.
Episode 4—Road Test for Maturity teaches the very important lesson of independence and the responsibility that comes with that. Some of the cars have decided to go on a road trip, but EJ is not invited to go with them. He is told that he is too young to undertake such a big trip, which greatly angers him. He does not understand that the other cars simply have his best interest at heart, and he continues to be angry at them. Taking matters into his own hands, he decides to embark on his very own road trip. However, he quickly discovers that he does not know the first thing about doing this all on his own. Independence is not all that it seems to him, as it comes with a greater responsibility than he could possibly have imagined. Auto B Good: Hometown Heroes uses this episode to teach children that independence goes hand in hand with responsibility, and that we should respect the authority placed before us.
Episode 5—Rumors of War teaches children the value of patriotism and what this truly means. EJ and his friends have grown to love their home, especially the soccer field where they play many games. However, this land is threatened by a new super mall that plans to overtake that land. EJ becomes very upset as he does not want to lose this place that has become so special to him. Determined to do something, EJ and his friends make a plan to stop the new mall from going in. They fight for the land that they love, which teaches children the lesson of patriotism and how this applies to them and their own country. EJ also learns what it means to fight for something he loves, which teaches the lesson of perseverance.
