The creation of VeggieTales from the minds of Buck Denver Asks What's in the Bible? series

The very successful series for kids was made possible by Phil Vischer and Mike Nawrocki and their business Big Idea Productions. From the beginning their goal was to make a series of videos for kids that not only represented Christian values and morals but also stories and lessons from the Bible. The animated series was about stories being told by fruits and vegetables that reappear in each video. Each episode was sent directly to video and it's first program Where's God When I'm S-Scared was released in December of 1993. In total, the company of Big Idea has discharged about more than 40 VeggieTales episodes, music albums, a few episode of Larry Boy (Larry the Cucumber), a few holiday episodes and two full movies like Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie and The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything.

In the 1990's the idea for VeggieTales came to Phil Vischer as he was experimenting with an animation software to utilize it to make some sort of videos for kids. Because of the limitations he had to face due to not having the best animation software, Vischer decided to design characters without the complexity of extremities, hair or clothes. His first animated example was a human like candy bar. In that moment Vischer's wife told him that maybe parents would prefer a character that represented something healthier than candy. Due to this comment, he decided to design characters based off of fruits and vegetables, a more healthy choice. In the early days of VeggieTales, the cast that made the character's voices possible were personal friends of Phil Vischer like for example Jim Poole and Dan Anderson. Both of them had joined Vischer in several plays in their community church.
